Anastasia Rurikov Simes is a Russian-born artist who uses her traditional classical training to describe the timeless and timely tale of Love and War. Using bright and bold colors, Ms. Simes composes dynamic and symbolically charged imagery of animals and figures that expresses her subjects with beautiful complexity and depth. Living in Washington, D.C., her concept of War is influenced by the constant power struggles and political warfare that takes place daily in her city. On the other hand, she sees Love as older than War and as governing us with unwritten laws and irresistible temptations.
Ms. Simes is an accomplished and multi-talented painter, costume designer and set designer. She received the Helen Hays Award for Outstanding Costume Design in 2011 for her work with the Synetic Theater. She is a two-time nominee of the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Set Design, and a three-time nominee of the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Costume Design, also for Synetic productions. Ms. Simes graduated from the Krasnopresnenskaya Art School, Moscow, Russia (1979), Surikov School of Fine Arts, Moscow, Russia (1987), and received her Masters of Fine Arts from the Art School of the Russian State Institute of Cinematography, Moscow, Russia in 1994.
Ms. Simes has exhibited at prestigious venues nationally and internationally including at Zalma Gallery, New York, NY; MOCA, Washington, DC; ART-MANEZH, Moscow, Russia; Dom Nashiokina, Moscow, Russia; and the Embassy of the Russian Federation, Washington, DC. http://www.rurikov-simes.com
